Description
Runa is the first red blend of the winery, and its name points to the local people of the Altiplano and the Quebrada de Humahuaca: strong, noble and full of identity. A blend of Syrah and Malbec that in some vintages carries a small addition of Tannat or Cabernet Franc — the style holds year after year, but it is never quite the same wine twice.
This is the most rustic wine at Viñas del Perchel, made with very little intervention in the cellar. It is fermented and macerated for more than 45 days under a minimalist winemaking approach. The words that define it are character, wildness, strength, rawness, personality and identity. The goal is a pure expression of this terroir, so the wine is left alone to show the best of itself.
"Deep, intense dark red. Aromas of ripe red fruit and the spices typical of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, with faint toasted notes from its time in oak. The entry is powerful and opulent, filling the mid-palate with fruit and showing a deep, long expression of great volume. Firm tannins, good texture and muscle. A long, profound finish."
Viñas del Perchel is a family winery set in the heart of the historic Quebrada de Humahuaca, between Huacalera and Tilcara, in Jujuy. It began in 2005 with an ambitious and clearly defined goal: to make extreme wines in an extreme place. They were among the first to plant fine varieties for winemaking in the Quebrada, at more than 2,625 metres above sea level, under exceptionally demanding natural conditions. It is one of the northernmost and highest wineries in Argentina.
The vineyard was adapted to the land without damaging or removing the native plants around it: the vine lives alongside them. Since 2014, oenologist and agricultural engineer Gabriela Celeste has advised the family on their high-end wines, and together they have drawn out the full potential of this singular terroir. All of their wines spend between 12 and 18 months in French or American oak, in honest, limited releases that express the colours, aromas and flavours of the place where they are born.
